Scaffolding tarpaulins are usually made from woven polyethylene (PE) or coated PVC, both waterproof and reinforced for tear resistance in site conditions. PE tarpaulins are lightweight and economical, typically around 100 to 260 g/m², while PVC sheets are heavier, more durable and better for long-term or flame-retardant use. Reinforced hems and metal or plastic eyelets strengthen the edges where the sheet is tied down.

A scaffolding tarpaulin is attached by threading rope, bungee ties or cable ties through the eyelets along its edges and securing them to the scaffold tubes. Space the ties at every eyelet, roughly every 300 to 500 mm, and pull the sheet taut so wind cannot get behind it. Overlap adjacent sheets down the joins and tie all edges to keep the cover watertight and secure.

Choose a scaffolding tarpaulin sized to cover the bay height and length with enough overlap at the edges and seams, and check the eyelet spacing so it can be tied firmly to the tubes. Standard sheets often come in sizes such as around 2.6 to 3.5 m in one dimension to suit a scaffold lift, with eyelets every 300 to 500 mm. Allow extra material for overlap between panels so no gaps let water or wind through.

Choose a scaffolding tarpaulin when you need full waterproof and windproof weather protection to keep the site dry, and a net when you mainly need debris containment and airflow. Solid tarpaulins block rain and dust completely but catch far more wind, so the scaffold must be tied to take the extra load, whereas open mesh nets reduce wind pressure. Many sites use debris netting in exposed conditions and switch to sheeting where full weather protection is essential.
