Scaffold protection nets are mesh sheets fitted to the outside of scaffolding to contain falling debris, dust and small tools and to help protect workers and passers-by below. Debris nets catch material and reduce dust spread from the working platform, while safety nets are designed to arrest a falling person or larger objects. They also screen the working area and can reduce wind-blown dust leaving the site.

A debris net is a fine mesh that contains dust, chips and small falling objects, while a safety net has a stronger knotted mesh engineered to catch a falling worker or heavy items. Debris netting is lighter and mainly for containment and screening, whereas fall-arrest safety netting is a load-rated protective system installed to catch people. Choose a debris net for dust and small-object containment, and a certified safety net where fall protection is required.

Scaffold nets are usually made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) mesh with UV stabilisers so they resist sunlight, weather and tearing over long site use. The UV-resistant treatment stops the mesh becoming brittle outdoors, and reinforced edges with eyelets add strength at the fixing points. HDPE netting is lightweight, rot-proof and can be reused across multiple projects.

Scaffold nets are fixed to the scaffold tubes by threading a rope through the reinforced eyelets along the net edges or by using bungee ties or cable ties at regular intervals. Space the fixings roughly every 300 to 500 mm around the perimeter so the net is held taut without gaps. Overlap adjacent nets and secure all four edges so debris cannot escape and wind cannot lift the sheet.

Scaffold nets do increase the wind load on a scaffold because the mesh catches wind and transfers the force to the structure and its ties. Finer debris netting and solid sheeting create more wind resistance than open safety mesh, so the scaffold design and tie pattern must account for the added load. Always check that the scaffold is adequately tied and braced before covering it with netting, especially in exposed or high locations.
