Decking screws use a torx (star-shaped) drive because it grips the bit far better than slotted or pozi heads, transmitting high torque without slipping or cam-out. This lets the screw drive fully home and countersink flush into hard or dense decking without stripping the head, even when driven in large numbers with an impact driver. The secure engagement also makes screws easier to remove later for board replacement.

Stainless steel decking screws are best for permanent decks and for tannin-rich or wet timbers like oak, cedar and thermo-treated wood, where coated screws can corrode or cause dark staining. Corrosion-resistant coated or galvanised decking screws are suitable and cost-effective for standard softwood and composite decks in most climates. For coastal or ground-contact areas, choose A2 or A4 stainless to avoid rust streaks and keep the deck looking clean.

Fix each decking board with two screws at every joist, set about 20 to 25 mm in from the board edge to avoid splitting. Leave a small expansion gap of roughly 3 to 6 mm between boards for drainage and timber movement, and pre-drill near board ends or in hardwoods to prevent cracking. Drive the screws until the head sits flush or just below the surface so nothing catches underfoot.
