How to Build a DIY Shoe Rack With Steel Tubes: Step-by-Step Guide
Once you have your dimensions and materials ready, you can start assembling the frame. You connect the steel tubes with the right fittings, and your rack is ready in a few minutes.
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Steel Pipes
First, you need to prepare your steel pipes. For this shoe rack, you’ll need 8 tubes for the long sections (top and bottom frame), 4 tubes for the vertical supports (legs), and 4 tubes for the short side sections.
If your supplier provides pre-cut pipes in the exact lengths you need, you don’t have to cut them yourself. It’s better to order pre-cut pipes when possible, as this saves time and avoids cutting mistakes. But if you already have longer pipes, you can measure and cut them according to your required dimensions.
One more thing to share: since galvanised steel pipes already have a protective finish, you can use them as they are without having to spray or paint them first. But if you’re using non-galvanised pipes, you definitely need to apply a protective coating to prevent rusting and fading over time.
Step 2: Assemble the Bottom Frame
First, assemble the bottom of the shoe rack. Attach the 4 vertical tubes (500 mm) to the 4 base flanges. Then, attach the four 3-way mid-rail corner fittings to the lower ends of the vertical tubes.

Take 2 tubes (1000 mm) and connect them to the 3-way mid-rail corner fittings. These tubes will form the lower front and back sections of the rack. This determines the length of the shoe rack.
Step 4: Connect the Side Tubes
Now attach the two tubes (300 mm) between the 3-way mid-rail corner fittings on each side of the frame. These tubes form the short sides of the rack and determine the width of the rack.

Step 8: Add the Short Tee Fittings
Attach the remaining 4 short tee fittings to the two side tubes (300 mm), as we did for the lower tier. Use two tee fittings on each side and keep them at the same height.

Now connect 2 tubes (1000 mm) between the short tee fittings. These tubes will support the shoes on the upper tier. Finally, connect the remaining two tubes (1000 mm) to the upper 90° elbow fittings to complete the top frame.

The shoe rack frame is now complete. Check that all the tubes are properly connected, the frame is level, and the base flanges sit stably on the floor.
