A dowelling-type post base is a galvanised steel post support fixed by inserting a dowel or spigot into a pre-drilled hole and securing it with resin or grout. It is used to anchor a post base to a concrete surface, or to join a post to its base, giving a clean, hidden fixing without a bulky bolted plate.

Dowelling-type post bases are made for common square timber posts such as 70x70, 90x90 and 100x100 mm, with the post seating on or into the base. Match the base to your post section, and ensure the dowel hole diameter and depth suit the dowel supplied for a firm, aligned fit.

A dowelling-type post base is fixed by drilling a hole in the concrete or post to match the dowel, cleaning out the dust, then setting the dowel in resin or grout and letting it cure before loading. This dowelled method gives a strong, concealed anchor without needing a large surface-mounted bolt plate.

Dowelling-type post bases are made from galvanised steel, so the zinc coating resists corrosion where the base meets concrete, resin and outdoor moisture. Setting the dowel in resin also seals the fixing, helping keep water out of the drilled hole for a durable connection.

A correctly resin-set dowelling-type post base gives a strong, rigid fixing for fence, pergola and structural posts once the resin has fully cured. Load capacity depends on the dowel diameter, embedment depth and the strength of the concrete base, so follow the resin's cure time before applying full load.
